Birds: Their Side of the Story

"We are in for an entertaining evening on April 10 as one of our favorite speakers, John Himmelman, regales us with avian tales in his new program Birds: Their Side of the Story.

How did our most well-known birds earn that distinction? What are some of the crazy things they make us do? John shares his light-hearted stories of birds, birding, and birders – from cuisine to cartoons; ornaments to icons; murmurs to murders."

Nature Walk at Lake Hammonasset RWA Trails
10AM-Noonish
For Menunkatuck Audubon

John naturalist John Himmelman on a walk exploring a little-known RWA trail system on the border of Killingworth and Madison. We’ll pass through several habitats, including a small sand plain, as we search for birds, bugs, plants, herps, and… I guess that about covers it. Something interesting always pops up!

Meet at the back entrance to the property. Menunkatuck has a group permit. Directions from Rt. 95: Get off exit 63. Travel north up Rt. 81 toward Killingworth. Continue on 81 past the 80/81 traffic circle for another 2.3 miles. Make a left at the light (the only one you’ll come across) onto Rt. 148. Travel 2.9 miles and make a left onto Emanuel Church Road. Go another .4 miles and make a left onto the gravel road (North Chestnut Hill) by Emanuel. After a few hundred feet, there will be a house in the woods on the left, stay to the right where the road branches off just after the house. Take all the way to the end (it ends at Hammonasset River) and park at the RWA gate across from the Pine Orchard cemetery. John’s cell is 860-575-2172, if you get lost. Email jhimmel@comcast.net if you have any questions.

for the New Haven Bird Club
8AM - noonish
Free and open to the public

We're bringing back a trip from the past! Join us as we seek out spring migrants and wildflowers on a special 1.5 mile hike through the State Forest. This section of Cockaponset offers a variety of habitats: conifer and deciduous forest, marsh, riverine areas, towering gneiss ledges, Along the way we'll visit a vernal pool hosting Marbled Salamanders. Be aware that the incline of the last 1,000 or so feet will leave most of us breathing a little heavily so we'll take it slow. Meet at the Rte. 80/Rte. 81 commuter lot at the traffic circle in Killingworth. The site is about 5 min. from there.
